About
Dutch in the USA is a blog dedicated to sharing the experiences of a Dutch individual living in America. Join me as I am exploring the challenges and joys of living in a new country.
When I first set foot on American soil, I carried with me more than just a suitcase. I brought a rich heritage of Dutch pragmatism, a deep appreciation for art and music, and a curiosity about the land of opportunity. Born and raised in Rotterdam, I had always been fascinated by the contrasts between his homeland’s measured approach to life and the grand ambitions of the United States.
Settling in Illinois first, I quickly adapted to the rhythm of American life, though not without a few surprises. The sheer scale of everything—from highways to grocery stores—felt overwhelming at first. The culture, too, was different: where the Dutch valued directness and consensus, Americans thrived on individualism and relentless optimism. I admired their drive but often found myself longing for the gezelligheid of a Dutch café, where conversations lingered over strong coffee, beer and simple pleasures like bitterballen.
Politics was another adjustment. Having grown up in a country with a strong social safety net and a deeply ingrained sense of collective responsibility, I found American politics both fascinating and frustrating. The polarization, the debates over healthcare, the deep-rooted individualism—it all stood in stark contrast to the Dutch polder model of compromise. Yet, I appreciated the passion and engagement of the American people, even when I disagreed with their viewpoints.
Now, 13 years into my life in the U.S., I embrace both worlds.
Life as a Dutchman in America is a balancing act, but for me, it’s a journey worth taking.
