Dutch Barbie doll wears a costume native to the fishing village of Volendam. Her dress includes a blue bodice and striped skirt accented with an embroidered collar and apron. Her hulletje, a traditional white bonnet, rests atop her blond braided hair, and flairs out to the sides. Her delicate feet are encased in white “wooden” shoes, called klompen, that are perfect for life in the Netherlands because they keep the feet dry, regardless of the weather. Release Date: 1/1/1994

A Good Find
Having been in box for 19 years, I was surprised when only the rubber bands on the doll’s braids had deteriorated. No fading or other quality/wear issues. Mattel released a new Dutch Barbie last year, and I purchased both as gifts for my sister, and while the newer doll is certainly more detailed and accurate, the original Dolls of the World Barbie is as gorgeous as ever.

She is so adorable!
I began collecting Barbie as an adult earlier this year; this is my first “Dolls of the World” Barbie. She is so adorable! I love her face, hair, dress, and even the box! I love all the attention to detail in her costume! Can’t wait until I can afford more in this series!

from the Land of the Tulips
Dutch Barbie is wearing a folk costume from the fishing village of Volendam, a village in North Holland. There are 12 provinces making up the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Each province has its own native costume. The back of the box in which Barbie is packaged (which is very simple) gives information on some aspects of her costume: her Dutch cap is called a hulletje, her wooden shoes are called clompen. Her dress of blue bodice, skirt striped in blue and white are accented with an embroidered collar and apron. The fabric is cotton and very crisp. While this is not an elaborate costume it is still very nicely done. I am happy with the purchase and my granddaughter liked it very much.I always try to pair folk stories with the dolls of the world that I get. This time I will be looking for elves, and gnomes and goblins. But also there is the great transition from the Dutch Sinterklaus to our American Santa Claus.Holland, Michigan has a tulip festival every year which is simply lovely. If you go to tuliptime.com you can find information on 8 diffrent folk costumes of the Netherlands and you can see them as well. Just follow the information on dance and dance costumes to find it.
